THEORETICAL PAPER-MOTIVATIONAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE HEALTH BEHAVIOR.
March 9, 2019 Off All,
In this course, you have explored motivational factors that influence health behavior, theories and models that are used to explain health behavior, and communication models that may be used to derive the best health outcomes from professional-client interactions. This week’s Application Assignment gives you the opportunity to apply all of these components to facilitate health behavior change. In addition to applying the components mentioned above, you also apply motivational interviewing skills to the health behavior issue. Motivational interviewing has been defined by pioneers William Miller and Stephen Rollnick as “a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence” (Miller & Rollnick, 2002, p. 25). In simpler terms, it is a way of communicating with clients or patients by channeling their desires, concerns, motivations, and ambivalence in order to increase their intrinsic motivations for behavior change. For this Application Assignment, continue working with the issue, population, and health behavior theory(or theories) or models (Health Belief, Transtheoretical, Social Cognitive, or social networks and social supports) you selected in Weeks 2 and 3 to use in this paper. Consider motivational factors that potentially impact this health behavior issue and the motivational interviewing skills you might apply to target those factors. Reference: Miller, W. R., & Rollnick, S. (2002). Motivational interviewing (2nd ed.). New York, NY: Guilford Press. The assignment: (8–10 pages) Using the model(s) you selected and applying it/them to your chosen issue: Identify the health behavior issue you selected. Describe the target population you identified that is affected by this issue and explain why the issue is a health behavior concern for that group. Reference at least one article or other scholarly resource that provides statistics to support your explanation. Identify the health behavior model(s) or theory (or theories) you selected to examine the issue and explain why you selected it/them. Explain how each model or theory might be used to examine the issue and facilitate health behavior change within the target population. Describe three motivational factors that may influence the willingness of individuals within the target population you selected to change behavior and explain how each factor may do so. Explain the relationship among communication theories/models, the motivational factors you identified, and motivational interviewing. Explain which motivational interviewing skills might be most useful in addressing the motivational factors that you identified. Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course
