Assignment
“It can’t happen to me.” Denying that a behavior can have a negative consequence is one of the cognitive distortions we use to allow
ourselves to engage in a risky behavior. This particular distortion is a common slogan among an age group known as Emerging Adults.
This week, you will prepare a paper summarizing recent research on risky behavior in emerging adults. You may focus on one behavior in
particular, or on the general phenomenon of risky behavior.
Your paper should include the following:
Health behavior models and theories for understanding risky behavior
A definition and description of emerging adulthood
An analysis of the theory and research on emerging adults and why risky behavior is a common correlate among this age group
Research that relates health behavior at this time of life to later life
Suggestions for how risky behaviors can be prevented in this age group, taking into consideration their particular cognitive and social
development.
Your paper should rely on at least five research articles published in peer-reviewed journals within the past five years.
Length: 5-7 pages not including title and reference pages
Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly
to this topic. Your paper should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Review APA Form and Style.
